Advice for encouraging new people to DAoC

There are several articles dedicated to the concept of F2P and it's supposed effectiveness in drawing in new people. I'm personally skeptical of it, and I don't believe it is the only thing Mythic could do to turn the game around.

So what suggestions can you think of to help reverse the games decline?

I know a lot of people say they would like a fresh server start. I could see that being an interesting idea, but the major problem would be the risk of dividing the population and doing further damage. However, the risk could be minimised with a limited duration server reboot.

Why not open a new server for one month, two months, three months etc, allowing everyone to start from scratch. At the end of the set time, the server closes and characters from that server are transferred to Ywain. The server could have restrictions like limited character slots, one realm, anti-bot coding, etc.

It would also allow mythic the opportunity to play with PVE and RVR without messing with Ywain. Perhaps the new server could use an old frontier, or modify PVE to give it a more classic DAoC feel.

If it proves successful, there is no reason Mythic couldn't do it over and over, using different modifications each time.

Anyway, that's what I thought.Hope it can work for you.

The second part of new race/class on DAoC

I was thinking on what would make me or some of the players I used to play with come back to game and new race/class combos is something I def think would work and add to the game overall. I based my ideas off of races that are lacking in game and/or missing to make a race specific guild like a race not being able to be 1 support at all is kinda lame. Thread is just a open discussion to maybe get some devs eyes on it and bring these changes to future patch.

Midgard.

Valkyn is mine and many others favorite race but so rare due to not being able to be a support/only one caster and most mid tanks use strength which they lack in so they really do get screwed. Class I would love to see would be Shaman(they are tribal race and yet cant be a shaman cmon bro this should of been from launch of Si) Valkyn valkyrie to give another tank in chain and they use a dex based wpn in spear and cast heals so valkyn would benefit alot. Valkyn mauler I would love to see too since most savages are troll or kobold. Any other caster like a scam or runie or warlock just to break it up giving someone a choice to play a valkyn caster and not be a bad. Skald or thane would be cool too but above combos I think are more needed and more important.

Frostalf really just lacks in the tank area and even though they don't benefit being any other tank then a thane I think a warrior or zerkervage any 1 of those just to add some uniqueness would be cool.

Hibernia.

Sylvan is a very underused race and are made out of wood so I don't see how they weren't able to be a ranger from is release with living among all those tall trees in domain you think they would use a bow well. besides ranger I think one more tank for the sylvan should be added I personally think it should be blade master don't know why luris got that cause now u cant tell at all what your fighting a ns/bm/ranger all having dual wield being tiny as hell. Other option is champ or mauler for the sylvan I think would be cool choice(staff sylvan mauler u know that's awesome). Sylvan vampiir might draw some people to that class as well and would be very unique looking.

Some more options for races to bard/bainshee I would propose as well I am not saying luri bard but like shar bard/bain or elf bard.

New Race/class combos that should be added next patch on DAoC

Albion

Friar being a saracen would be really nice but i could see why this is not allowed cause they are presumed muslim but i think after 11 years of daoc some saracens are willing to convert and follow the path of the friar and go to church, They can be paladins so why not friars

Heretic needs some more choices briton and inconnu dominate the lands so highlander and saracen would be choices some people might enjoy to play opposed to those too(everyone hates cows it seems which brings me too next topic)

Minotaur.
this is my 2nd favorite race but is really just never played cause the only race where minotaur was best was mauler but then mythic allowed the higher str races to be maulers (troll/firbolg/ogre) so now they are even more in the hole. What really bothered me was in the labyrinth expansion video u showed minotaur support classes like druid/shaman/healer/cleric and yet they were not included which is false advertisement and really pissed me off. So i think minotaur should have access to all support classes like shown in video (healer/shaman/cleric/bard/druid/friar) since maulers can be the heavy tank and dw class on each realm i think they should have access too the si melee classes as well Savage/Reaver/Valewalker. Reaver would be nice for str based wpn reavers and valewalkers would really just be amazing looking and add another choice besides the 3 atm. Cow Savage just fits as a combo dont see why they cant be that class already.

DAoC: legal to change the files

I just want to tell you is why the files do change and when. I hope nobody will ever run in trouble.

A
the "client files" are all files covered by the patcher. so the "default*.ini" files are a part of the game client. BUT your personal "*.ini" files, screenshots, chat logs and stuff are NOT part of the client files. That's why you are allowed to delete and edit screenshots, to delete chat logs and so on. as a result of this, you are also able to copy that ini files between different computers and you are also allowed to modify this NONE client files to add spell crafting gems to your qbars. but the "default*.ini" files are different, they are still client files and if they really hate you they could punish you for editing them (i already said, i hope that will never happen).

B
you must understand how the patcher works, to notice that this DOES interfere the patcher. it does not do a look up on all files with every login. it only does so if there is a server side client file patch or if the local buffer file is missing. so basically the patcher is blind when talking about file replace / edit. you somehow abuse that behavior when editing client files like the "default*.ini". the alternative to that would be if they re turn on file check on every login... people hated it because some had to wait a very long time for 25000+ files to be tested... just delete the local buffer file and let the patcher do it's work and you will see it is going to replace the altered default*.ini files.

C
if you, mythic or anybody else created a file does not mater. only the fact matters that your files does not match the current live server patch. every modify to that live server patch file set is a violence to that "do not modify" rule.

D
mythic is or was reading VN boards and maybe even Mojo posts. but it's still you that has to ask if you are allowed to do something, not them looking all over the www to find tools that they may allowed or not.

E
the in-game support itself will tell you that you may try to delete your characters ini file in some cases. I had some strange crashes after login on only one specific character, and that's what the support told me first. why should they have a case like "broken character ini file" if nobody ever had problem with that? and back from my time as a volunteer on GOA daoc servers i also remember some crash problems with broken ini files.

Well DAoC is bad code in many parts. just log in with Atlantis ui and look into the ui. log and ask yourself why the default UI creates so much error messages

2 clients with different settings on one compute about DAoC

Found this in the 1.88b patch notes here

This is handy if you run main char with a big resolution and a second char on the same computer using a lower resolution, like I do.

If you run two instances of the game using the same client, but you have different settings for each one (such as having all the bells and whistles turned off on the second client), you'll need to do a little creative editing to give your destination folders unique names.

Open the root directory for the first copy of the game. Create a text file (using Notepad or some such thing) called paths.dat. In that file, type

[paths]

on the first line. On the second line, type

settings=name1

("Name" can be whatever you want.) Log into your first copy of the game and get to the character selection screen. Log out.

Now go to the SECOND copy of the game, and repeat the process. This time, type

settings=name2

Log into the second copy all the way to character selection.

You have now created custom folders for your characters. Follow the directions under "Step by Step" for moving your .dat, .ini, and .ign files into the new destination folders. Then go into this folder (use the run function):
%appdata% .. find the Electronic Arts folder, go into "Dark Age of Camelot"

I used:
[paths] <- goes into the top of paths.dat file
settings=main <- folder 1 (as in d:\games\daoc-main\paths.dat)
settings=buff <- folder 2 (as in d:\games\daoc-buff\paths.dat)

There you should have a few folders. I had mai, buf, LotM and DR. What you want is probably in the Lotm folder. note: the new folders for custom settings show up after you have started up the game once from each folder. For some reason it only used the first three chars in my custom names. "mai" and "buf". Anyway, I copied all the content from my "%appdata%\Electronic arts\Dark age of camelot\lotm" folder into "%appdata%\Electronic arts\Dark age of camelot\mai" and "%appdata%\Electronic arts\Dark age of camelot\buf". I then got all the quick login stuff and so on when starting up the clients again.

Sort the settings as you want them .. create separate shortcuts on your desktop and all should be well. Settings saved in one of them will no longer affect the other.

Dark Age of Camelot leveling skills

Bots are less necessary than ever before, but are still ideal and required if you want max buffs. I'm going to make a list of things I wish I had known right away when coming back.

1. Leveling with quests in the battlegrounds is the fastest way to level on your own. You can pick them up in portal keep, they are mostly self explanatory. Do tutorial zone from level 1-10.

2. At level 40 you can do a glass quest in Oceanus, you get 2 quests each from 2 npc's. One is near the blue portal, the other is near the afrit stone/porters, behind them. You do a short loop, the map will show you where to go. I start with statues, then harpy, then afrit, then treasure chests.

3. During the 40-45 phase you need to port to leirvik and accept bg quests 3 times. The first is level 40, second round at level 41, and at level 43 you get a third and final round of them. You go complete them at level 43, and turn them all in, only having to complete once for 3 quests worth of credit/xp. This should get you to 45, but it might just get you close if you didn't have guild xp bonus. You can complete some more oceanus or bg quests to finish it off.

4. At level 45 you can go do pict quests, on hib and mid there is almost always a bg up, you get the quest at the main border keep (SF/DC/CS) and port to the other border keep (non NF side) but it'll make you port to a refugee camp instead. The bg killing is visible when you port in, you'll see the camp and where they setup the first time and know where to go. On alb I'm not sure what they do, but if all else fails, just do bg quests.

5. There are a limited amount of good items price wise these days, but their prices are high. Money is a lot easier to come by, via pict quests, and various other things. Making a cheap template is fairly easy, but making a good one is going to take some farming plat. You'll likely have met people to help you with this by the time you need it, but just know that dragon items/glass/etc are all much cheaper and easier to obtain. The summoners items, laby, ML10 items are the high money items now.

6. Classes are mostly the same as 2-3 years ago in a general sense, but there are some changes you'll want to get caught up on. The newest patch notes are probably the most needed information in that regard. Anything else I'd suggest asking someone. The balance of the classes is very similar though, it's just people's perception and use are a little different. I wouldn't necessarily say anything in the past 2-3 years has made one class un-useable or not if you wanted though.

I think that's a big chunk of the things I wanted to know, and have learned since returning. That information is generalized of course, especially the last one, but it'll help get you on the right page I think.

DAoC leveling is much easier now

A focused person can level from 1 to 50 in less that a single day /played. If the player sight sees, crafts a bit, goofs off a bit, etc. . . you can go from 1 to 50 in less than a week IRL.

Also, all expansions are free and included in the game download from the main Herald download sight. The only fee is the monthly sub cost. (Old install disks do not work anymore. You will need to use the download install.)

Here is a thread with lots of info and links. Here is another thread with some guides that the previous poster referred to.

Edit: Leveling with a bot is nicer than leveling without a bot, but bots are not as necessary anymore because Mythic put into the game some NPC buffers that give reasonably good buffs and even without a bot leveling is much faster than it once was.

Ywain server population is fairly good.

The following is a bit of info/quote from the above listed link Here

"Ywain info:
Server population was dieing and to help keep server population up Mythic was clustering servers together. As the player population continued to shrink, Mythic needed to continue clustering servers but they had a huge problem, the database of old characters was becoming so huge (on the existing clusters) the database was becoming unmanageable. Because the existing databases were so huge, Mythic could no longer combine the databases, which meant they could not form a new cluster (yet they needed to cluster the final servers together to keep the population up to keep RvR viable).

Mythic’s solution, create a new server that everyone, all active players, will transfer to (everyone transfers except Mordred and the Coop). There are 10 Ywain login servers that are just character holding areas. The 10 login servers allow players to transfer up to 100 old characters to the new server, but Ywain 1-10 is only one server.

The old servers will be maintained as character holding areas for returning players; so returning players can come back and transfer toons over to Ywain."

DAoC player that rolled Mordred to farm ML10

I hope that you didn't do much farming.
Mordred has been archived. Character creation is no longer possible.
Transfers from Mordred/Camlann to Ywain will begin Monday, April 15th, 2013.
Players may transfer to any Ywain (1 – 10) of their preference.
The first round of transfers will be open *only* to level 50 characters.
Players *will not* transfer with any physical items whatsoever.
Players *will* transfer with the following
Level
Coin (on their character)
Realm Rank
PvP Stats (titles, kills)
Champion Levels
Master Levels
Bounty Points
Tradeskills
Quest Credit (including artifact, special items, Epic Armor, Dragonslayer etc...)

Due to the fact that players may not transfer with items, any level 50 player transferring from Mordred/Camlann to Ywain will be entitled to the following:
20 Platinum
1 Villa Deed
4 Housing Vaults
10,000 Bounty Points
2500 Dragon Scales
Choice of Epic Mount
Did you stopped trying to farm it pretty fast?

DAoC Guides about relics/siege

The way Ywain is at the moment: the realm with the most relics everyone just bails onto that realm and zergs the server to death (and it will ultimately result in server death we've seen it before on other servers)

Anyone else that has some maturerious suggestions go ahead and post them.

My suggestions for Mythic_Andy assuming he reads them (which hopefully he will... even if he doesnt agree with them it'd still be nice to know mythic takes suggestions in from european players)

1. Relics auto reset back to whichever homeland they were taken from after a set period (depending on the population)

2. Allow people to change realms instantly BUT make them get reduced realm points for an X hour cool off period to prevent so many switching realms instantly depending on who has the most relics.

3. Make relics harder to take! as in more than 2fg when no one is online.

4. Don't allow enemy players to log out inside keeps that hold enemy relics.

5. Add an extra gate to relic milegates, the reason behind this is basicly key keeps open the first gate, the second gate has to be rammed down/destroyed giving the realm a last chance to defend relics vs higher numbers with the advantage of a relic gate wall.

6. Because some of the above suggestions are rather harsh change the relic bonuses to:

Strength Relics
+% Melee Damage
+% RP Bonus
+% Adventure XP
+% Coin
Reduced Endurance cost on styles (passive bonus that effects the entire realm)

Power Relics
+% Spell Damage
+% RP Bonus
+% Adventure XP
+% Coin
Reduced Power cost on all spells (passive bonus that effects the entire realm)

How my view of RvR has changed?

I have been grey ganked/zerged (you albs love that)/seen animists abuse just about everything they can with broken shrooms (los / ignoring combat timers)

Just because you can do something doesnt mean you should.

The amount of radar and lag hacks i see in emain is so distasteful. (i now have fraps and record encounters so by all means keep using it. id be happy to make you re-level a new character when they ban your account)

On the positive side (if you can call it that)

I now have a genuine Hate for albs and hibs. GGz! Yall did it.

I will be adding fights/abusing any situation i can (following all uthgard rules of course) On those i deem it necessary.

5 Grey alb or hib heads will pay for every time An alt of mine is grey ganked. Yall brought this on yourself. Left me no choice.

Its funny yall pick the easiest realms and have to resort to cheating/zerging.

the one alb group (i wont name the leader but we all know who) Wont even come out unless they have 2x the people or 2x the RR's its pathetic

/rant over

Am i the only one that feels this way.... why do people do this?

If its for the rps, its not effective. Basically you kill me with honor ill come back, you act like a... well you know, i do one of the 1000 other things i can do in this game and suddenly you have nobody to fight. Do you turn to your "bro" and say im the best dbag and high five? I couldnt imagine what else people do after acting the way some of you do.

Anyways im ready for you to tell me how wrong i am and what not. Im open to suggestions as well as far as ways to give payback and or how to avoid these people. Just really ruins the overall fun mood that i usually have playing this game. But man is payback satisfying.

DAoC: Round Table Pub

Been a while, updated some out of date information and made some changes based on feedback in the thread :)  Been away from MMORPG.COM for a while so I figured this probably needed an update.  Glad to see folks still love this game!  Even if it is getting a bit on the 'older' side :)
I was pleased to find out that the trial for the game has been totally reworked since I originally wrote this guide and includes all the current graphics in the game (at the time of original writing you had to jump through a few hoops to get updated graphics on the trial client).  If you haven't tried the game in a long time it might be worth taking a spin on a trial as the graphics were updated in 2006 and are much much better than they were in the original game.
Official Sites to download trials from:
US Site:  http://www.darkageofcamelot.com
European Site:  http://daoc.goa.com/en/

Note:  If you download from the US site you will only be able to use US servers.  If you download from the European site you will only be able to play on the European servers.  The clients are incompatible so make sure you download from the correct site for the region you wish to play in.

Dark Age of Camelot

Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) is a 3D medieval fantasy MMORPG, released on October 10, 2001 in North America and in Europe shortly after through its partner GOA. The game celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011. The game combines Arthurian lore, Norse mythology and Irish Celtic legends with a dash of high fantasy. It is set in the period after King Arthur's death and his kingdom has split into three parts which are in a constant state of war with each other.
DAoC includes both Player versus Environment (PvE) and Realm versus Realm (RvR) combat. Players can choose to adventure alone or join groups. Players may also join battlegroups, which are formed so all members are able to get completion of credit in large-scale PvE encounters and for communication purposes in RvR.
Player vs. Player combat takes the form of Realm versus Realm, a term which DAoC invented.
PvE focuses on defeating monsters found in dungeons, the open world, and RvR zones. Players earn experience points towards obtaining levels by killing both monsters and enemy players. Gaining levels yields new skills, abilities, and access to expansion areas. The current maximum level is 50. Expansions to the game offer alternative advancement type levels that grant additional abilities to level-50 players. RvR is restricted to the zone New Frontiers where action ranges from massive battles to one vs one fights. Players are awarded realm points for each enemy realm player they kill. After gaining a certain number of realm points, a player gains a Realm Rank. While gaining Realm Ranks, a player gains Realm Ability Points, one for each rank you gain. Players are able to purchase with their realm abilities points certain skills unique to their class. Participating in RvR combat is strictly voluntary in DAoC and free-for-all PvP only exists on a dedicated server.
